Why Choose Us?

Catering for Special Needs Children with special needs are assisted in a variety of ways. The part-time teachers and teacher aides play a prominent role in helping class teachers best meet each student’s needs. We provide support programmes in maths, reading and writing and a Perceptual Motor Programme for students needing assistance in developing greater co-ordination. Our school works closely with specialist agencies to ensure that best advice and support is accessed. An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is written for children who gain support via the Ministry’s ORRS (Ongoing Reviewable Resourcing Scheme).
ESOL – English for Speakers of Other Languages For newer arrivals to New Zealand with no English, or limited English, some additional help is provided with discretionary funding made available by the Ministry of Education. Specialist teachers provide small group tuition in English.
Music Extension Opportunities exist for students to be involved in a number of musical activities that are additional to classroom programmes. Our senior choir participates in Music Festivals and, along with the Junior Choir, perform at assemblies and local venues. Lunchtime recorder and instrumental groups offer free music tuition for children from Year 3 onwards. Junior, Middle and Senior school musicals are produced biennially.

Stationery

All students stationery can be purchased from the school office.
Classroom activity fees, $10.00 per term or $30 for the year need to be paid at the office before the end of term 3.

It's also a great time to meet the office staff and update any of your contact details that may have changed.

NO SWEETENED DRINKS POLICY

At our Board of Trustees Meeting last week, August 2017 we agreed on a ‘No Sweetened Drinks Policy’ at Henderson North School. Please see our policy below.

Rationale
We care about the health of our students

Sugary drinks are one of the most significant causes of poor oral health and contribute greatly to childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
We care about their achievement
Sugary drink consumption is associated with problem behaviours. Studies have found poor diet and nutrition are associated with lower academic achievement.

Our Commitment
We will ensure parents and students receive clear, consistent messages about the importance of healthy choices and the impact of sugary drinks by:

• continuing to educate students about the importance of healthy drink choices and
the benefits of consuming water.
• actively promoting water as the best option in school publications.
• ensuring staff commitment to model healthy drinking habits.
And we will create an enabling environment by:
• actively discouraging sugary drinks being brought to school by students.
• providing water (and plain reduced fat milk) as the only drink option for students. • allowing students access to water during class time.
• not associating our school with programmes that promote sugary drinks.
• ensuring school lunch options don’t include sugary drinks
• ensuring sports teams will only use water as their source of hydration.
• not selling sugary drinks as part of school fundraisers.

Fruit in Schools

Picture
The programme began in 2005 and at the start of Term 3 of 2016, 547 schools and 102 thousand students were taking part.
FIS targets children at the eligible primary schools who each receive a free piece of fresh produce daily.
The key objectives for Fruit in Schools are to see:
  • children in participating school communities eating more fruit and vegetables
  • more school communities promoting health through a whole school approach
  • an increased awareness and implementation of healthy eating and physical activity.
The programme is funded by the Ministry of Health and managed by the produce organisation United Fresh.
