Year 1's Cultural Celebration

We are growing our own Warriors here!

Our Garden

Mr Stokes has been working so hard to get our garden up and running.  We now have raised bed, worm farms, bird houses and you all remember donating the plastic bottles for our green house!  We recycled wood, bathtubs and all manner of things to reduce what is going into the tip.  We have started planting so watch this space for updates.
We had an exciting and amazing science show at school.  Our wonderful Mr B is a very clever scientist!

Senior Runathon

Thank goodness the weather held out so we could hold our senior runathon - Keen is our champ this year, running a massive 66 laps!  I think he even beat Mr Cartwright this year!  Congratulations to Keen and well done everyone who ran this year.
Thank you to everyone who baked and brought in delicious goodies to sell today for the bake sale.  It was all delicious!  Tailah brought in a beautiful jar filled with candy and cake pops - we thought it was so pretty that we would raffle it instead - see the video below to see who was the lucky winner!

ePro8 Challenge

Eight of our bright sparks participated in the ePro8 Challenge.  For the first time our school entered the the competition, which is an engineering and problem solving race. This year over 7000 students from 700 schools from throughout the New Zealand are taking part. Teams compete to:
  • build large sized structures
  • solve practical problems
  • engineer using pulleys, motors, gears, wheels and axles
  • invent machines that can complete simple tasks
  • undertake unusual and fun experiments.
  • construct basic electronic circuits.
  • solve interesting problems using practical maths
Each team of four will be based at a workstation containing an impressive assortment of easy to use parts and equipment. The 3 hour event begins with a tutorial on the equipment teams will be using.
Teams will then be given a booklet containing a number of challenges. All the challenges are of an entertaining physical nature.
Teams will choose which challenges they wish to undertake. The harder the challenge, the more points it is worth. There is not enough time to finish all the challenges - so strategy is required to know which ones to go for.
When teams have completed a challenge they push the "Big Red Button". They will be judged and the points will be added to the live leaderboard.
Heats will be held throughout the North Island. The top four teams from each heat qualify for the regional semifinals and a regional grand final. The winning team will be crowned the region's EPro8 Challenge Champion.
Rooms 3 & 4 visit a farm in Pukekohe  - visiting the dairy farm was certainly an education, we got to touch an electric fence, we learnt all about the process of how the farmers collect milk and all the equipment they use.  We learnt about the cows udder and did you know that all the teats are separate?  You can milk just one and the others will still be full of milk!
Aaand they're off!  We have four teams playing rugby at Waitakere College today - wish them all luck!
We had some lovely Anti-Bully Ambassadors visit us from Henderson Intermediate today.  They have been working hard raising awareness around keeping ourselves safe and they donated three wonderful books to us.  Such an important message, thank you for sharing with us!
Mrs Kay and her speech therapy group are making Ambrosia.  This activity was lead by a discussion with Marcus and how he LOVES eating yoghurt with marshmallows and strawberries.  Sounds delicious!

Year 4 & 5 Bake Sale

This has to have been our best bake sale ever!  Students were asked to donate ingredients and they all had a turn in the kitchen whipping up delicious treats - toffee apples, cookies, cakes and cupcakes with fancy icing.  The students were so excited to be baking - some had never had the opportunity to help in the kitchen before and it was a bit nerve wracking!  We are fundraising for a surprise trip at the end of the year!

Squash!!!

The 2017 Inter-School Speech Competition Winner this year is our very own, very talented Tesla!  Congratulations Tesla!!!

Thank you to these dancers from Henderson Intermediate School - it was lovely seeing some past students come and visit us.  All who were in the audience really enjoyed the performance.
We were so excited to welcome our visitors from The Warriors!  Many thanks to Isaiah Papali'i and Ken Maumalo for coming to our school.
Rooms 9, 10, 11 & 12 travelled to the Sky Tower as part of our topic on "Window".  Thank you to Jeremiah's Nana for our wonderful trip photos and videos.

Talofa Lava - it is Samoan Language Week.

This weeks assembly was a little different than normal - as it is Samoan Language Week we enjoyed the beautiful Samoan National Anthem and a wonderful slideshow presentation on Samoa, it's people and culture.  Here are some videos for you to enjoy from assembly.

Birdhouses

Building birdhouses - Birds need homes too, warm and dry ones - just like us!  Students from Room 3 have made these from scratch - starting with a design, then cutting the wood, drilling and screwing all the pieces together - all the way through to completion.  We think they look fabulous so far.  They are just applying some finishing touches and then they will be fixed around the school for our feathered friends to enjoy.  We are inspired now to make a dovecote!

Dance class!  Not bad for our first lesson, we are quick learners!

A big thank you to Mr Stokes, our caretaker for making sure our Anzac Day tribute looks fitting.

Room 9, 12 & 12 celebrated Grandparents and just how special they are by inviting them to school.  We read stories with them, sang them some songs and shared morning tea.  It was just lovely.

Krypton Factor

On Sunday March 5th a group of 16 children from HNS competed in the Henderson Lions Krypton Factor at Rutherford Primary School.  We had two teams entered and they competed against teams from 15 other West Auckland schools.  The children had 12 challenges to complete, each requiring strategies to test their physical and mental agility.  The children worked hard, showed sportsmanship and had loads of fun.  The outcome was also favourable as HNS A Team came third overall.  We wish to thank all the families who came along to support the children and also a big thank you to all the wonderful people at Henderson Lions Club who organised the event.  We all had a fabulous day.  Cindy Zahra and Sona Chawla

Ronald McDonald came to talk to us about Road Safety.

Year 3 & 4's using rope to create ocean wave like patterns.
We've been learning how to play basketball!  We have learnt to pass, catch, dribble and shoot the ball high up to the goal!
We have all seen how tricky our school entrance is to enter - visibility is very difficult, especially during drop off and pick up times.  We have tried repeatedly over the years to get the council to put in a crossing and we are so excited that we now finally have one!  Here we are learning how to use it to keep ourselves safe!
We got our Fancy Feet out as the Walking School Bus came to visit us!

Tui Glen Park Trip

The Year 0/1's walked to Tui Glen Park to explore the flora and fauna and enjoyed a lovely picnic lunch.

Blokes Breakfast - celebrating dads!

Thanks George for teaching us some pretty fancy football skills!
Great mates and creative minds!

Big Book Off Parade

Now that the 'Read-a-thon' has finished - we celebrated by encouraging all the children to come to school dressed as their favourite book character - as you can see everyone enjoyed the Parade immensely!

Senior Softball

We had perfect weather for the Senior Softball.  Our students did us proud with their fantastic sportsmanship skills.  A great time was had by staff and students alike.  We had two softball teams - one girls and one boys.  The girls finished first and the boys came fourth.  We had two mixed t-ball teams.  T-ball 1 finished first and T-ball 2 came in fourth also.  Great results!

Krypton Factor

On Sunday 20th March, eleven children represented Henderson North School at the annual Henderson Lions Krypton Factor which was held this year at Woodland Park School.  The children had to compete against a number of West Auckland schools in twelve tasks which tested their physical and academic abilities.  We are excited to report that we got third place this year and a great day was had by all.  The children showed great sportsmanship, confidence and determination throughout the whole competition.

The children who participated were Adria, Glaeshia, Roy, Tailah, Tyler, Zephaniah, Suzianne, Azriel, Krystal, Niekol, James and Team Coach Miss C Zahra.

Senior Swimming Sports

The weather was perfect and we had a great turn out for spectators supporting their children.  A great day was had by all.  It was great to see the students participating with swimming, some finding new found confidence after the lessons they have recently received.  Thank you to all the staff involved in organising the day and thank you to all the mums, dads, grandparents, aunties and uncles that made the effort to come and support our swimmers!
