Welcome to Room 18
Julie Craven - 2020

Hello to my lovely children of room 18.

Once again we are in lockdown, unfortunately we had no warning of this. But please remember to stay safe in your bubbles and we will all be together again soon.

Don't forget to keep checking in daily as I will be putting some activities up and also Miss Cassidy, our student teacher, will also be adding some fun lessons for you to try.

You will be able to find links to a number of home learning tasks which you can complete from home.

You can also access your studyladder from home. And you can check out the
nzmaths website. And the Ministry Of Education (MOE) website, activities for parents - "learning from home" - is also very good.

If you have any problems accessing these please contact me on
jcraven@hns.school.nz.

Please familiarize yourself with these pages as I will be working with the students on these.
Please stay safe out there and remember to be kind to each other.

Lots of love to you all from Miss Craven and Miss Cassidy.

Hello and welcome to week 5 of school room 18 and families. I hope you are all safe and well and ready for learning. Remember I need you to email me or send me a message daily while we are at school.

I also would like you to keep a diary each day to tell me what you have been doing, you can write this in an email to me or you can send me messages through the studyladder page.

Try the DMIC math activities on this page and send me your working out by email or send photos through email of your workings, remember I am looking to see how you got an answer and how you worked it out. I will add to these.

Please send me any stories you have written and remember to keep in touch and check this page every school day.

Parents, there are many ideas online for activities that you children might enjoy doing over the lockdown period and the Ministry of Education is partnering with TVNZ to deliver entertaining educational programming for our tamariki, including teacher-led lessons. These can be viewed on the Duke channel from 9am to 1220pm.

Please whanau encourage your children to do some hands on activities as well as some reading practice and writing practice.

Keep practicing your handwriting and your letter sounds.

Do some dancing with your family, you will find the link for Just Dance Kids below.

If you want some calm down time, try the Cosmic Kids Yoga adventures.

You will find all the links you need below.
Please try the activities on staying afloat.

Have a great day and I look forward to hearing from you all.

And a big thank you to those who have already contacted me, I love reading your stories and seeing all your photos and art work too.
Storyline Online.

Every weekday, when you can, I would like you to choose 1 story from storyline online and read it and then answer the following questions.

What happened in the story?
Who were the characters in the story?
What were they doing?
When did it happen?
If there was a problem, how was it solved?

Email me your answers please. You will find all the links you need on this page.

Try these with your family.

~ Learn to spell and record correctly (and in order) the days of the week

~ Practice writing the names of everyone in your household - record their age beside their name.

~ Write a pretend email to your favorite TV or game show character telling them why you enjoy the game or show. Don't forget to save your work so we can read it again when you return to school.

~ Play a game of opposites with someone. If you say 'up' they say 'down'. How many pairs did you get? Can you make a list of these? Next time see if you can add to your list.

For my children that work with the ESOL teachers please have a look on the language clinic page on our school website.

Early New Zealand History.

This term we have been learning about early settlers in New Zealand.

Please watch these short videos with your children.
(If they don't play then please find them in the link

Can you think of other ways of making 20?

How many ways can you make 30?

How many ways can you make 50? 75? 100?

Cats cradle :-)

As you know we have been learning string games in class, we looked, and we found one that is called "Cats Cradle"
this one will require help from someone in your family.

So have fun with it, and remember, things take time so don't stress if you don't pick it up straight away.

Parents/Caregivers -

here are a few tips to help with online learning and learning from home.

Having a routine or schedule that works for all of you is important so that everybody knows what to expect. Learning happens all the time, and can be woven in to your whānau routine.
Top tips:
  • Talk to your child and listen to their ideas about how they would like to learn.
  • Consider sharing responsibilities with other members of your whānau or bubble.
  • Plan out with your child and whānau what your day or week will look like.
  • Build in regular times for breaks, fun and to connect as a whānau.
  • Secondary students may need a separate quiet space and there may be learning opportunities for younger children through everyday activities.
  • If you have limited learning devices, consider how everyone will share them.
