Welcome back to Lockdown August 2020

Please check in so I can keep the rolls up to date.
Text or ring 021 834 677
email  jangell@hns.school.nz

Over the next couple of days I will put some new activities
on our classroom page.
However, there are lots of ideas, books, activities already on our classroom page.
Please scroll down and have a look.

I will also be contacting you either by email or phone.

If you need to contact me please do.

Here is our first story called "Be Kind"
What does being kind mean to you?
How do you show kindness?
How do other people show kindness to you?
Enjoy the story.

What does being kind mean to you?

There were some lovely words in the book.
Talk to your family and think about how you could show the meaning of those words in action.

The best way to show kindness is through your actions.

How could you show:-
being gentle
considerate
patient
sharing
complimenting someone

Let's make a big bubble of kindness

Picture
Picture

You might like to make a bubble picture with food colouring, dishwashing liquid,  water and a straw.

Here are some more ideas about kindness.

  1. Leave a new bottle of bubbles at the park for other kids to find. Put a note on the bottle that says “Hope these bubbles lift your day!”
  2. Help out a  neighbour by collecting blown rubbish from their garden.
  3. Leave a cold beverage for your postman.
  4. Draw Tic Tac Toe boards on the sidewalks in your neighbourhood and see if others can play using some small rocks you leave behind.
  5. Send a homemade get well card for someone at a children’s hospital.
  6. Give thank you notes to police officers or others in your community that help you and your family.
  7. Write a letter by hand and send it by regular mail to someone who doesn’t expect it.
  8. Get some chalk and write good morning on your neighbour’s driveways.
  9. Record your child singing a song and send the video to somebody who really needs it. It will be sure to put a smile on their face.
  10. Paint words of kindness on rocks (known as “kindness rocks”) and put them secretly in your neighbour’s  or friends garden.

When I videoed the story  of "Timo and the Kingfish" I ran out of room on my phone so you will need to watch it  in two parts..
Here is the first part.

                                                       Part    1

Here is the last part of "Timo and the Kingfish"
                                                     Part 2

This art idea goes with the story "Timo and the Kingfish."
All you need is paper, paint and plastic forks.
Here  are a couple of images. Spread the paint over a piece of paper with plastic forks. When it is dry cut out a fish shape.

We had fun doing the leaf hunt and then a couple of nursery rhymes. We finished off with some games. Most of the children are back at school now.
On Tuesday the class will be looking at the changes in the winter weather and the seasonal changes of birds flying to warmer weather, some animals hibernating, warmer clothes, shorter days and longer nights.  Snowflakes, places where it snows, snowy activities and frost. These are all things we will talk about this week.

To find out facts about Winter you may need to do some research. Here is a start. Watch this video.

Try this experiment. Making frozen water.

In the Winter we often get a few days of frost but, What is frost?
Have a look at this little video.

Here is a lovely Winter story for you to enjoy.

We have been looking at different emotions/ feelings now that we are back at school. The colour monsters feelings were all mixed up. We have helped him to sort them out as well as sorting out our own.
We have looked at what makes us happy, sad, angry and scared. We have talked about how we can help each other when we are sad, angry and scared.

Here are some new pictures from Dakota. We love your work!

Week beginning Monday 18th May.
If you are not coming back to school yet you will still need to do some work. You can watch the TV programme if you like or you can do the activities I have put here.
For Reading:-Go to sunshine classics and choose 1 or 2  books to read each day.
Our  writing, this week will be based on "The Colour Monster"  Practice your letter formation like Casey Caterpillar.
Learn your words.
Sing the Jolly phonics songs.
This will all help with your writing and reading.

Have a look at this book. We will be talking about feelings this week.

Picture
Picture

Here is our new friend “The colour Monster”
He is all mixed up with his feelings  so his colours are all mixed up.
Lots of things have happened lately.

Some of the time he is feeling anxious.
We need to help him sort his colours out.

Let’s start with the colour Yellow
How does Yellow make you feel?
In the story it talks about making you dance and jump about.
Does it make you feel like that?
Think about a time when you were happy. (I don’t just mean happy, I mean super, fantastic, crazy happy)
Let’s draw a picture.
Put lots of happy yellow in.

Write a story about it.
or
You might like to write about the colour monster and what makes him happy.

Each day we will choose a new colour just like the book.
Tomorrow it will be Blue.

We are starting our Maths this week with a reminder of tally marks and graphing.
You could tip out your toy box and sort out your toys into things that are alike. You can make a graph from that.
If not get Mum or Dad to draw up this graph in your book for you to count and colour in.
or ask Mum or Dad to make up some data for you to graph.

Picture

Don't forget your graph has to have a title, numbers up the side and words or pictures along the bottom.
For more ideas on graphing go to www.worksheetfun.com/graphing
You could collect autumn leaves to graph, tip out a packet of skittles and sort into colours, sort the washing into socks, undies, tops, shorts etc, sort a handlful of lego into sizes.

Picture
Each day will be a different colour Monday- Yellow, Tuesday-Blue, Wednesday-Red, Thursday-grey and Green, Friday- Pink and every colour.
On Monday the children will make yellow bulldozers out of shapes.
Picture

Wow oh wow!! We are coming back to school. Yeah!!
I bet you can't wait.  I can't wait to see you all.
So!! come back to school on Monday unless you are sick.
Thank you for all the lovely messages. I will put all the posts on today.
Can you let me know  if you are intending to come back to school on Monday. You can text me on 021 834 677 or send me an email  jangell@hns.school.nz

                                         Reading
I have put more stories on Sunshine Classics.
If you could record yourself reading a story, I can hear how you are going.
To do this:- Go to the last page of the book you have read at least 2 times. There is a list of activities.
The last one in the list says record.
Click on this. Read the story out loud.
I will be able to listen to you at my house.

Look what these people have been doing!!
Do you have anything you can share with our class?
Take a photo, send it to me and I will put it on our page.

Writing:- Watch this video clip of Murray Gadd talking about a story called "My Mum" He then writes a story. It is quite long so have a little break at the end before watching my video about writing the next sentence.

Mothers Day is on Sunday. You might like to make something for your special person.

Picture

You might like to make your mum some paper flowers
for Mothers Day. Try these :- https://www.firstpalette.com/craft/folding-paper-flowers-6petal.htmlThere are lots of other ideas on this website: https://www.redtedart.com/mothers-day-crafts/

If that seems a little too tricky cut out some flowers from an old magazine and stick them on a piece of paper to make a bunch of flowers.

I love this story. I hope you do too. "Why I love my Mummy"

A little Mothers Day Song.  You could learn it and sing it to mum on Sunday.

You might like to make Mum a Mothers Day Card. Look at these websites for inspiration. Then watch my video on what to write inside your card. https://iheartcraftythings.com/mothers-day-crafts-for-kids.html  or try 10 adorable mothers day cards.https://iheartcraftythings.com/mothers-day-card-ideas-kids-can-make.html

Here is the Jolly phonics Learning. Give it a go along with Casey Caterpillar. The better understanding you have of letters, sounds and formation the easier it will be to write stories.

Teaching Phonics at home

Every word is made up of letters. Letters represent sounds. This is  how we learn to read along with recognising whole words in context, using pictures and information around us to make sense of it all.
We start with letters, sounds, 2 letter words, organising ideas always with the intention of making sense of the text and the world around us.

Henderson North School uses the system “Jolly Phonics” to help children attain the sounds of the alphabet.
They combine this with Barbara Brann’s method of handwriting. This is teaching the correct formation for each letter. The children all know the story  Casey Caterpillar which explains how to write letters.

ALL CHILDREN NEED TO KNOW THE NAMES OF THE LETTERS, THE SOUND THEY MAKE AND HOW TO WRITE EACH LETTER

Eg:- For the letter s.
My name is s my sound is sss
Open mouth and back again ( how you write it.)
For the letter a
My name is a, my sound is a (as in cat)
Open mouth and short stick. ( how you write it)

I will be going over the letters, the sounds and how you write each letter. I will be following the Jolly Phonics system but not necessarily in the same order.

Book 1      s a(this is the wrong a) t i p n
Book 2      c k(this is the wrong k) e h r m d

Making words using the first book letters s,a,t,i,p,n,

This Casey Caterpillar video goes through the whole alphabet showing you the correct formation of the letters.

This next Casey Caterpillar video is going over sloping sticks and odd letters. I think I missed this one out earlier.

I found this lovely story. I hope you enjoy it.

Don't forget to tell me what you have been doing!  Did you go to the end of your drive on Anzac Day?  Did you make a poppy for your fence? Did you bake Anzac biscuits?
Have you been out walking with your family? I see so many people out walking and riding their bikes and scooters.

The Big Block of Chocolate by Janet Slater- Bottin

Which chocolate candy will float?

We gathered 1 of each of our chocolate candy bars (minis) and started experimenting by asking the question - will it skink or float? The children touched each candy, feeling its weight and we discussed what each candy contained inside - nuts, caramel, cookie, etc and used this information to make their predictions. They made their predictions on a dry erase board where I had written the names of all the chocolates we were testing.

To conduct the experiment I filled 2 small bowls with water and the children took turns adding chocolate candies into the bowls. We observed whether each piece sunk or floated and they checked the results against their predictions.

I found the story Caterpillar Shoes. This is one of our favourites.

Casey Caterpillar

This is how we learn our letter shapes and formation. Listen to the story as I retell it. We will look at some of the letters today. This is a good chance to practice your handwriting.
When you know how to write your letters correctly without thinking about it writing stories will become much easier.

Not another problem!! It looks like the the school server is a bit overloaded and won't upload videos but it will upload youtube clips. I have found some to share on Casey Caterpillar.
Miss Pearce will help you with Casey caterpillar.

Well Now I have a video channel so we can up load many more of my videos. WOW!  I have learnt so much during Covid 19

Anzac Day is a time to think about people who went to war and fought to  save our country.

In normal times there would be ceremonies held at dawn to remember the men and women who died in any of the wars that involved soldiers and nurses from New Zealand.

Because of the lockdown people will not be allowed to commemorate the work people did in the war because we are not allowed to get together.

Have a look at these stories pictures and ideas.

Now have a look at my video. This always makes me laugh.
Did you notice anything else on that shelf?
There was a brown cardboard box.
It had DIY House.

Random stuff that I  found while scrolling.

Picture
Using covered straws( Like the ones in McDonalds) or make a pocket for the straw to slip into.
The pocket needs to come about 1/3 of the way down the straw.
Stick a rocket picture to the straw.
Hold the straw upright with your hand near the bottom. (away from the Rocket picture)
Point the straw into the air and blow through the bottom of the straw.
Hopefully it will shoot into the air.
You could make different ones and have a competition.
Note: DON'T make the rocket picture too heavy or too big.

I found another straw activity that looked like fun.

This looks fun too

Very Little Red Riding Hood

This day is going from bad to worse. I now have two videos that I can't up load. I have found out that videos can't be longer than 15 minutes so I trimmed the duck in the truck but it still won't upload. I tried a new video called Very Little red riding hood that won't up load either. I will give it one more try by up loading other things and see if that works.
Well, would you believe it.
The Very Little Red Riding Hood has uploaded Yay!!!

Duck in the Truck

There are 2 videos for Duck in the Truck because I ran out of space on my phone. Sorry about that. The second one is all about the rhyming words in the book with a challenge at the end. There seems to be a problem with up loading the video. I will start again tomorrow. Sorry about that guys.

Well here goes for the second time  Cross your fingers

There are lots of things you can do  with the road work theme
If it is a sunny day you could go outside and draw a roadway on your drive way with chalk. You could make stop signs, traffic lights out of cardboard. You could ride your bike or your scooter around it like a real road.

Inside you could use tape to make a roadway on the floor for your little cars and trucks. You could draw one like the one on this cardboard box.

On a sunny day you could a piece of cardboard or open up a pizza box and lay it flat. Put some sploges of paint on the cardboard and drive your cars, trucks and construction vehicles over the paint to make different tyre patterns. It's a bit messy but lots of fun.

Bees are fascinating insects. They work together to create a community which works together. This is a little bit like the community that people live in. This is especially important now when things are different and we are all at home staying safe. Everyone has special jobs to do to make the hive successful. While you are listening to the busy bees video think about the different jobs that happen in a hive. Write and draw the little bees saying what their jobs are.
Check out these pinterest site. There are lots of activities to do with bees.   click on some of the links so you can find an activity or art project that suits you and use the things you might have around your house.   https://www.pinterest.nz/pin/239676011397661804/

Look what came to my Garden!

Usually when I sit outside on my deck I can hear the distant hum of traffic on the motorway. Now, of course it is very quiet so I can hear more birds. I heard some squarking and chattering in the Emerald tree. This is what I saw.
Picture

Every year these Eastern Rosella parrots come to feed on the Emerald tree. They call as they fly.  They chatter in the tree talking to each other as they feed on the long seedpods you can see in the picture. Although they are a pest in New Zealand and frighten away our native birds, they are very beautiful and lovely to watch.  They hang upside down stripping the pods of seeds, insects and larvae.
You can hear the Rosella calling in this video

Here is a story about a parrot called Harold.
Here is a pintrest site with some parrot activities if you want to have a go at making a parrot.   https://www.pinterest.nz/preschoolplanetus/parrot-craft-idea/

This is my first attempt at uploading a video.
The first story is The Very HungryCaterpillar.

I have also included an animation of the story and some activities to go with it.

Here are some fun activities for this story.
You could  draw and write about the life cycle of the caterpillar. Draw some beautiful butterflies. Do you remember we talked about the butterflies wings being the same on each side. We called it symmetry so when you draw your butterfly the wings need to be symmetrical. Maybe take a photo of the best one to send to me at jangell@hns.school.nz

Here are some ideas for activities. Your mum or dad will need to help you with this
STORY SEQUENCE: Provide a long piece of yarn, a hole punch, and patterns of the different foods (apple, pear, plum, strawberry, orange, piece of chocolate cake, ice cream cone, pickle, Swiss cheese, salami, lollipop, piece of cherry pie, sausage link, cupcake, watermelon) which appear in this story. Students will color, cut, and punch a hole in each food. Then they may squence the story by putting the food on the string as they appear in the story. You may want to have your students do this while you read the story for the second time or you may wish for your students to try this after you have read the story.
PHONICS: Use the patterns of the foods above. Make cards with the beginning letters (a, p, p, s, o, c, i, p, s, s, l, s, c, w) of the foods. Have students match. To make this more difficult. Place your food patterns in a pocket chart, say a sound, and then pick a student to come up and take one food item that matches the given sound!
MATH: Initially, the caterpillar in the story is small. Provide each group of students eight caterpillars of various sizes (make out of construction paper) an 8 index cards for each caterpillar showing the inches of one of the caterpillars. Have the students work together to measure the caterpillars and then match the caterpillar to the correct index card. Walk around the room and check each groups responses. When finished have each student place all the materials from this activity in a ziplock bag. Collect each set and keep for future use.
MATH/GRAPHING: The caterpillar in this story enjoyed many foods. Prepare a graph with the foods the caterpillar ate. Give each student a small sticky note. Have them write their name on the sticky note. Then have the students place their sticky note on the area of the graph that shows their favorite food. When everyone has placed their sticky note on the graph - ask graph questions: What food was choosen the most/least? How many apples were choosen?...
SCIENCE: Use patterns of the life cycle of a butterfly and have students practice sequencing them. (little egg on leaf, little caterpillar on leaf, larger caterpillar on ground, very large caterpillar on big leaf, other leaves nearby have been eaten, caterpillar building a cocoon, caterpillar inside of a cocoon, butterfly emerging from a cocoon, and butterfly flying away)
LITERARY ANALYSIS: Try making a Venn Diagram comparing this story with The Very Busy Spider.

Room 9 have been learning about environments around the sea including rock pools.  We have identified different animals that live there and how to protect them.  We understand that leaving rubbish behind at the beach can harm sea creatures. Please make sure you leave nothing behind when you visit the beach. Check out the rock pools we made.

Check out our Sea Monsters!
We painted the fronds of Nikau Palms.  Aren't they AMAZING?

Week 2, Term 4 to Oct 21st

Welcome back to Term 4!  Time is flying fast with our lovely class.

This week we have been super busy.  We had Frith from Kid Power visit us.  You will have seen the bookmark your child brought home.  Ask them to tell you what 'Brain Power', 'Body Power', 'Voice Power', 'Fence Power' and 'Rubbish Bin Power' is my personal favourite - that is when you put 'rubbish' words a person says to you, into the bin, and chuck them away.  Very important not to hold on to those mean or 'rubbish' words.  We will be continuing to learn about social skills, and how to keep ourselves safe using our 'powers'.

We also had the runathon on Wednesday.  I was so proud of all of the class, who ran their very best.  They also had outstanding behaviour for this sports day.  Particular mention goes to Joseph, who ran 28 laps!!!  We have been practising and training our running and it showed that hard work pays off.  Lots of the children went beyond expectations.  Well done!

AND, we have been learning about 'Firewise'.  We have been looking at the different types of fires, and ways that fire can be useful.  We have learnt that if there is a fire in our building, we must - GET DOWN, GET LOW, and GET OUT - FAST!  We will be learning about matches, lighters and candles next - and we have a special visit from the Fire Brigade in week 4.  Please discuss fire safety with your whanau at home - very important.  You should have received a story and activity book with a DVD to help with this.

Here are some of our stories about Kid Power this week...

"Someone comes up in my face and I don't like it.  And I made a fence." - Aisha Fakalupe

"On Friday a visitor came.  She taught us Kid Power." - Charlie-Rose Martell

"My brain is in here.  It has power to think." - Angela Quach-Chieu

"When you get tried to be hit, you will make a fence." - Ethan Webb

"I used my Voice Power to scare away someone who pushed me." - Harlem Rankin

Week 7 to Sept 9th

Well we have had to test a lot and I am happy to say that most Term 3 testing is now completed.  All of the children in Room 9 have been working very hard to progress in Reading, Writing, Handwriting and Maths.

We have been visiting our 'Olympic Team' classes.  All of the children go to a different class to learn about different countries.  Next week we will have Olympic Sports days on Thursday the 15th and Friday 16th.  Please come along to support your children if you are able to.

We have done some big thinking work around Class Rules.  The children are old enough now to take responsibility for themselves within the class.  They have come up with a great list of rules for our class and we have started to make a 'Rules Lion' for our wall.  Watch this space!

Next week, week 8, we have the Union Meeting on Monday afternoon and our School  Olympics Day on Friday.  Normal reading groups will happen where possible on the other days.  We will spend the rest of the time, finishing our 'Rules Lion' and learning all about fractions.  If you are able to discuss halves and quarters at home, that would really help.

Portfolios will come home on Tuesday 20th September.

In the image above we are playing Sounds Bingo

Week 5, August 25th

This week I have been testing writing.  I am very pleased with all  of the students' progress.  Well done everybody!  I have started to test reading and we will continue with that next week.

We have been learning about rules, routines - and medals!  We have been thinking and writing about times that we earned a reward.  Next week we will continue this focus, and also look at games we know.  If you have any games at home that require rules and turn-taking, please play them!  The children are learning to explain how to play a game.

Each week the Big Kahuna is allowed to take the 'Big Kahuna Box' home (like show and tell, they put 2-3 treasures in it to bring for news).  This is the only time children are allowed to bring toys to class.  We are also making each Big Kahuna a 'Shadow Chart', with positive phrases about their personality.  We are learning to notice the good in others, and to think about their strengths.

Ka Kite!

Welcome back to Term 3!

This morning we performed a skit inspired by Greedy Cat.  We performed this skit at assembly and think we did a pretty great job!  Please click on the link to watch us!

Week 8

It was a short week but we packed a lot in!

We have been learning the letters 'h' and 'r' and the word 'look'.

We have been enjoying lots of picture books, for our topic 'Celebrating Books'.

We learnt about repeating patterns for Maths, for example:
square/circle/square/circle/square/circle...., or
square/circle/triangle/square/circle/triangle/square/circle

We can say what shape would come next.  This is an important skill for early maths.

We are continuing to notice healthy lunchboxes!

I hope you are all having a lovely Easter break with your whanau.  This coming week will also be short, only three days.  It will be a testing week, instructional reading groups don't happen during test. So you may not get books home each day.

We are looking forward to welcoming our new starts tomorrow!!

Ka kite ano!!

Week 6

We have had a really busy week!

Tuesday: We had the Henderson Library Road Show visit us.  We learnt all abut books, looking after books, and the library card rap!  Joining the library is free, and a fun thing to do with your family.

Wednesday: We had a story teller, Apirana Taylor, visit us to play Maori instruments and to tell his stories to us.

And today, we had a wonderful trip to Tui Glen Park!  All of the children had fun and were so well behaved.  Well done Room 9!
Some wonderful writing pieces by Room 9.

Week 5

This week we have been discovering painting.  Children learnt how to hold the paintbrush and explore paint.

We have been learning our letters and letter sounds (s, a, t, i p and n).  We have been learning basic sight words for reading (I, am, can and like).  We have been reading the book 'The New Cat', about a cat called 'Greedy Cat'.  Some children came to our Meet the Teacher night and had their photo taken with Greedy Cat.

Unfortunately the trip to Tui Glen Park was postponed because of the bad weather.  The new date for ht etrip is this Thursday, the 10th of March.  Please let Mrts Schierning know if you can help with the trip.

We have been learning about Healthy Food, and healthy lunchboxes.  All of the children drew their healthy lunch box.  We are encouraged to bring healthy food for our lunch each day.

We learnt to roll a ball accurately.  We rolled the tennis balls to hit a target, and rolled them through a goal.  We can even say the work accurately!

Swimming is changing again - Tuesdays and Thursdays from now on.  Please bring your swimming gear on these days.

Happy Birthday Aisha!  She turned five on Friday.

Ka kite ano!
